DAPTACEL vaccine, known as a DTaP vaccine, is given to children to prevent 3 serious diseases – pertussis (P), tetanus (T) and diphtheria (D). DAPTACEL vaccine works by causing the body to make its own protection (antibodies) against these diseases.
DAPTACEL vaccine does not contain any live bacteria so it cannot cause pertussis, tetanus or diphtheria to the children who receive it. It only uses inactive parts of the bacteria to help develop immunity to the disease.

Vaccination is the best way to protect your child against pertussis, tetanus, and diphtheria. Of course, DAPTACEL vaccine may not protect 100% of the people who get the vaccine and it cannot be used to treat any of these diseases.

DAPTACEL vaccine is administered according to the standard DTaP vaccine schedule. To be fully immunized against pertussis, tetanus and diphtheria, your child should receive a total of 5 DTaP injections by the time he/she is 6 years of age. Generally those injections are given at 2, 4, 6 months of age, then between 15 and 18 months and at 4-6 years of age. If your child misses one of the scheduled injections, talk with your child's doctor or health-care provider and schedule another visit as soon as possible. Show me the full immunization schedule.

DAPTACEL vaccine has been demonstrated to protect against the full range of pertussis infection. In clinical studies, it has been shown to be 85% effective against severe pertussis, and 78% effective against all severities of pertussis, including mild disease. Experts have stated that vaccines that are protective against mild pertussis may be more effective at interrupting disease transmission.

The most common side effects with DAPTACEL vaccine are redness, swelling, and soreness or tenderness where the injection was given; fever, fussiness, and crying more than usual. Other side effects may occur. DAPTACEL vaccine should not be given to children who, after a previous dose of the vaccine, have had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction) or encephalopathy not attributable to another cause.
These side effects usually clear up within a few days. If these events continue or become severe, tell your child's doctor or health-care provider.
